IISE Announces a New Collaboration between the Applied Ergonomics Society and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society

Collaboration offers access to wider knowledge base and improved information transfer

Atlanta, GA – March 15, 2022 – The Applied Ergonomics Society (AES) has signed a collaboration memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), creating a formal working relationship between the two organizations. The agreement will allow members from both societies, representing the spectrum of human factors and ergonomics (HF/E) professionals, to connect via networking opportunities and formally open lines of communications between each organization’s members that could spur identification of knowledge voids and improve translation and adoption of new knowledge.

Both organizations share common goals to advance HF/E knowledge, expand the reach and awareness of the HF/E discipline, and ultimately improve human-systems interactions. HFES members, which include students, researchers and industry practitioners, will be able to further engage with AES’ members, who use their expertise to apply research findings for successful implementation within workplace settings.

“Working together, HFES and AES can only strengthen the visibility of HF/E and the important work done by researchers, academics, and practitioners,” stated Gary Allread, President, AES. “This formal MOU is just the start, and I look forward to more discussions on how we can expand access for both of our organizations in the future.”

Reid, PhD. “The collaboration between our societies will not only bring to HFES an improved understanding of industry’s HF/E needs, it will ultimately advance our profession and strengthen the positive impact of the HF/E discipline on work, society and the world.”

Gary Allread and Tom Albin, who are members of both AES and HFES, developed the terms of the MOU with input from other Society members. The MOU includes numerous collaborative opportunities for each Society’s members, such as presenting at the other’s annual events, co-sponsoring additional educational activities, creating forums to discuss research topics, developing white papers and position statements, and more. The organizations will also begin to cross-reference news and information relevant to both their memberships.
