Industrial and Systems Engineering has the potential to have a growing impact in organizations. The knowledge base provided by BSISE (and advanced degrees) is robust, broad, and foundational to support contributing to many timely and critical opportunities and problems organizations face today. This webinar will focus on how to 'think' about the positioning of ISE for full potential contribution. The presenter will provide a conceptual framework and then provide examples where ISE has and is being more fully capitalized on.
Dunn reviews how University Hospital increased the percentage of telemetry alerts responded to within a timely manner by 200 percent. This presentation compares Six Sigma to other PI approaches, talks about defining and measuring defects, assessing risk and targeting solutions to reduce those risks, addressing resistance to change, and “hardwiring” solutions so they become part of normal operations.
Kaizen events are well understood to be a powerful way to achieve significant performance improvement in a relatively short time period. Some lean practitioners, however, have been reluctant to manage kaizen events as lean 6S projects, fearing that the rigor and structure will slow the kaizen process down. This presentation will show that that doesn’t have to happen, that the two concepts can reinforce each other and achieve greater success without sacrificing the natural urgency of kaizen events.
Our speaker will cover the most powerful (but non-statistical) Six Sigma tools to be used for avoiding problems. The session reviews nine, interrelated and supporting problem-avoidance and decision-making tools. At the end of this session the participants will be able to leverage these traditional problem solving tools to lead their staff or organization to better thought-out decisions; ones which avoid negative, unintended consequences and collateral damage.
Great emphasis is placed these days by private businesses and government on quickly improving manufacturing and administrative processes through waste elimination and variation control. Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma are two tools which allow substantial wasted effort to be eliminated from processes and provide a statistical understanding of data. Many managers who are required to manage and improve processes have been placed in their position with little training in productivity improvement techniques or a background in analyzing data through statistical techniques. They face a formidable task in dealing with waste and variation in the processes that they manage.
